Girls are welcome too!

We welcome both boys and girls into the group! Throughout Scouting, girls have the same opportunities as boys. On several occasions the national admission of girls into Scouting has surpassed that of boys!

What uniform will my child need?

Core uniform

  • Group Scarf (and woggle)
  • Section Jumper/Shirt
  • Scout Activity Trousers
  • Black Shoes
  • 2x Handkerchiefs
  • Section Polo Shirt (optional)

The group scarf and woggle are provided when a child is invested into the Scouting Movement. Your child may also bring comfortable trainers to wear during games and activities.

Do I need uniform straight away?

You do not need to purchase uniform straight away. You may wait for a period (usually a month or two) to see how your child is settling in. A short while after a child has full uniform, they will be invested into Scouting (where they receive their group scarf).

What Scouting ceromonies can we attend?

We understand that each Scouting ceremony is an important part of each childs time in the Scouting Movement, both for them and for their parents!

Investiture This cermony marks a person joining the Scouting Movement. They must learn and understand the Scout promise, law, salute and handshake. During investiture they will receive their group scarf and the badges which identify them as a member of the Scouting Movement and relate to our group; 16th Barking and Dagenham. There is no fixed timescale for investiture and the timing can be discussed (also see Uniform)
Moving on Ceremony Different ceremonies occur when a Beaver moves into Cubs and when a Cub becomes a Scout.

The following ceremonies are held at our group. Family and friends of the child involved are welcome to attend and enjoy the moment with them. Timing of the ceremonies can be discussed to ensure you get this opportunity

You can learn more about scouting ceremonies via this Scouting Resource Scouting Skills Ceremonies (pdf)

What fees are involved with scouting?

The Scouting Organisation estimates the cost of scouting at £50 - £100 a year.

Here is a more precise breakdown for our group. Each weekly meeting only costs £2.50 per child. This covers the cost of hall hire and equipment.
The annual membership fee set by the Scout Association Board of Trustees is £21.00 per member.
Uniform (except scarf, woggle and badges) will need to be purchased from school uniform shops, Scouting stores or the Scouts website.
Occasional trips and camps may have additional costs.
